Real Bride - Bernadette

Beautiful Blushing Real Blackeyed Susan Bride Bernadette. We loved making blush wedding dress for her very special day. Such a bubbly, free-spirited Soul, the kind of bride that is right up Blackeyed Susan's street!

Tell us how you met your partner (please include the proposal story)
Cute Story Really…… Haig was prefect in High School with my elder Sister and they were friends. I was 10 years younger so don’t remember him, but Haig remembers me running around the house. My sister and him remained friends. I was living in JHB at the time, and when I moved back to Cape Town I bumped into Haig and we became friends. We have been together 7 years, and Haig proposed to me on the beach. It was so beautiful, the sun was shining, the sea was beautiful and very few people around….very special.

When and Where did you get married?
We got married at Family Friends Wine Farm called Joostenberg Wines near Stellenbosch.

What made you choose the venue and the date?
We got married 21 October 2017. I did not want a big “fancy, formal and over the top wedding”. I wanted simple and special. Being Portuguese, my small wedding still ended up being 112 guests in total. It was an 11am ceremony with a LONG, LAZY and delicious harvest lunch that followed. Barrels of beer, bottles of wine, amazing band, farm games and plenty food was the order of the day.

I didn’t want a whole procession – so our best man was my 13 year old nephew Aidan (Who is my favourite boy in the world and was the best, bestman ever). I had 4 flower girls ( my daughter and 3 neices). They all dressed in “Farm” theme with cowboy boots, tutus and denim shirts. Fabulous.

What was the theme of your wedding?
Rustic, Farm and Casual Day Wedding. Relaxed atmosphere. I mean where else do you stand with a beer in your hand and watch a couple saying their vows in the garden!! Being Portuguese, the whole family got stuck in to help. My sister Vanda was amazing and pretty much planned it all, she is a Rock Star. Cousins helped out and everyone got stuck in. My brother-in-law Billy did all the cooking! Sisters Margs the flowers…etc..

How did you hear about Blackeyed Susan?
I walked into the shop one day and loved the whimsical, romance designs. Popped onto the website, fell in love and the rest is history.

What made you choose the dress you chose?
I love simple, soft pink, lace, vintage and comfortable. The blush tone colour was so unusual and perfect for a day wedding.

How was your experience with fitting your dress and the final product?
It was such a pleasure and easy experience. My dress fitted perfectly and I felt so pretty.

Any advice or tips for bride-to-be’s when choosing their dream dress?Chose a style that you will be comfortable in on the big day, a design that you can dance in and be relaxed in.

Your beautiful documentary style photos were taken by:  J9 Photography, Why did you choose this photographer to capture your special day?
J9 Photography – Janine is just so relaxed, lovely personality and captures the day through different eyes.

What was your most memorable/favourite part of your special day?
My sister from Australia is very ill with Cancer and more…so I knew she would not make it to my wedding. The day before, we were setting up the barn and as I turned around….. THERE IS MY SISTER TESSA….. I actually started to shake and sobbed like a child. It was a surprise for me and now that I think about it, I could never have spent my wedding day without my sister.

My other favourite part was having my Dad walk me down the garden path, and I saw Haig had a twinkle in his eye.

As I do pottery, I also loved making hand-made pottery hearts for all my lady guests. So very special and loved by everyone, special memory of our day.

Any advice for future brides for the overall planning of their wedding and how to deal with their nerves on the day?
Just relax, time goes by so fast, don’t sweat the small stuff and enjoy. I had the most relaxed attitude to my wedding. My sister Margaret-Ann said to me a few days before the wedding…..”So what flowers are you having”…. And I said “OH yes, we should do flowers, here is some money thanks a mil you are on flower duty” and she did amazing flowers.
