Real Bride - Mart-Mare
Posted on January 10 2018
Mart Mare knew exactly what she wanted as soon as she walked into her bridal fitting, simplicity and modern elegance. As soon as she tried on our "Put A Spell On you Gown" it was a match made in heaven. This beautiful soul was an absolute pleasure to work with and WOW! WHAT a stylish bride and groom
Tell us how you met your partner (please include the proposal story)
We were introduced to one another via a mutual best friend (who was my maid of honour!) and at the time we had both just come out of relationships and were pretty battered and heart-broken. That being said, it was New Year’s Eve 2011 and after a good couple of drinks and dancing away our sorrows to some fun tunes, we shared our first kiss on the dancefloor at Sgt Pepper in Long Street Cape Town. Did I mention I was living and working in Jo’burg at the time and he was living and working in Cape Town? So of course that kiss meant nothing and consequently nothing came of it...except for the fact that this would be a regular occurrence for us whenever I came to visit in Cape Town. And then, in the middle of 2013, things just clicked for the both of us and we decided to give this vibe a real go. It was without a doubt the best decision I/we had ever made! We ‘long-distanced’ for just over 14 months, but it was never too challenging as we visited one another often and I had already started making plans to move back to CT before we knew this was the real deal. So let me fast forward through 3 incredible years of dating to get to the part everyone always wants to know about.
We knew pretty early on in our relationship that we wanted to get married, but we were in no rush to get to the altar. And then, when I least expected it to happen, he proposed. My husband is by no means conventional or traditional and therefore I didn’t expect him to propose exactly on our three-year anniversary, in front of a cosy fire, with our favourite band playing in the background, just the two of us alone in a beautiful cottage in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. I was completely stunned when he told me to open my eyes (having had to close them because he wanted to surprise me with a ‘small’ anniversary gift) and I saw him holding a ring in a box. I froze. Instantly. And after what felt like a lifetime of shocked silence, I realised what was happening and he realised he actually had to speak the question he wanted an answer to! The whole experience was very emotional and surreal, but so perfect.
When and Where did you get married?
We got married in Tulbagh on a beautiful fruit farm called Roodezand, 8 July 2017.
What made you choose the venue and the date?
We were both adamant about getting married during winter. Various reasons contributed toward this decision: My job as a teacher only allows me to take leave during school holidays and we wanted to honeymoon straight away; it’s out-of-season and thus quite a bit cheaper :); we both wanted to feel comfortable in our dream wedding outfits without worrying about warm weather and sweaty underarms - three-piece suit for him and the BLACKEYED SUSAN dress I had already spotted for me.
With regards to the venue, we had attended two weddings there in the past and besides the fact that it’s an all-inclusive (and breathtakingly beautiful) venue (i.e. tables, chairs, cutlery, crockery, glassware, decor, linen, catering, drinks, accommodation, sound equipment), we had heard amazing things about the owner, Karen, and how supportive, innovative and accommodating she is toward the bridal couple’s needs. Since we wanted to plan our wedding as efficiently and effectively as possible, we knew this was where we wanted to tie the knot. I can highly recommend booking this venue for a wedding as our experience of the entire planning process was effortless and completely stress-free, in large part thanks to Karen and her team!
What was the theme of your wedding?
No theme. We just went with what we and our bridal party were comfortable with in terms of colour and style - each to his own really! We had a few pennygum branches and candles in clear glass console jars on our tables and that was it.
How did you hear about Blackeyed Susan?
Roeline Daneel, my maid of honour and ‘cupid’ (she really had such a big part to play in all of this!), showed me dresses from your website soon after I got engaged and I immediately fell in love with the simplicity and originality of your designs.
What made you choose the dress you chose?
I am quite ‘fuss-free’ and my style is very simplistic and comfortable. I knew I didn’t want the typical lace wedding dress or anything that would restrict me from dancing up a storm, so comfort and mobility was really the first thing on my tick-list. I searched the web for a few designs and, as per Roeline’s recommendation, I also perused your site. As soon as I laid eyes on the “I put a spell on you” wedding gown, I knew it was the one for me. I instantly booked an appointment to have my first fitting. Blackeyed Susan was the first and only designer I fitted with!
How was your experience with fitting your dress and the final product?
My entire experience with Blackeyed Susan and Melissa in particular was incredible from start to finish. I always felt calm, relaxed and at ease and Melissa’s warm personality and ability to pre-empt my needs greatly contributed toward the personalised and detailed attention I received throughout. She was especially accommodating in altering the length of my hem after my last fitting had been finalised and my dress already collected! I also loved the fact that she posted some thoughtful Instagram pics relating to me to the Blackeyed Susan account - it made me feel very special.
My dress is sheer perfection (the capped sleeves, train and especially the pattern on the fabric is beautiful) and it is a garment I will treasure and have very happy memories of for a very long time to come!
Any advice or tips for bride-to-be’s when choosing their dream dress?
Choose a dress that YOU are comfortable with and feel beautiful in. Forget about what your family, friends and husband-to-be will think about it. If you look and feel beautiful in your wedding gown, that really is all that matters - trust me.
Your beautiful documentary style photos were taken by: Adene Nieuwoudt from Adene Photography. Why did you choose this photographer to capture your special day?
Neither my husband nor I are fans of posing for a camera and we nearly always end up pulling ridiculous faces when we do get photographed, so it was very important to us to book a photographer that would have some major patience and the ability to make us feel at ease in front of the camera. Adene did exactly that. She has been in the business for a long time and thus had the experience and skills needed to deal with two very awkward and camera shy clients. Our photographs look incredible and she is definitely a photography queen!
What was your most memorable/favourite part of your special day?
Seeing my husband for the first time as I walked down the aisle was without a doubt a defining moment in my life. In that moment I felt such extreme gratitude and joy towards this man and everything he does for me and means to me - he is an amazing partner and I was just so happy to be walking toward him knowing we were about to seal our commitment in front of all our loved ones. He was also super emotional and crying from start to finish, which I found very endearing! We said our own vows for our ceremony, so that was also really special!
Any advice for future brides for the overall planning of their wedding and how to deal with their nerves on the day?
I strongly believe that your and your partner's personality have a big part to play in how you go about the entire wedding planning process. Communication is key and planning things together certainly makes for a much more connected and fulfilling experience. On the day it helps to have a good squad have your back - so choose your wedding party wisely! From engagement through to wedding day was really effortless because we applied the above and followed our instincts in terms of what we wanted to do on our wedding day. Contrary to popular belief planning a wedding can be done stress-free! It also helps to drink a lot of champagne.
