Real Bride - Shannon

Shannon will always be a Blackeyed Susan Bride to remember. What a a true inspiration she has been, an absolutely beautiful soul inside and out. In the small amount of time that we spent with her we were in awe of the way she is truly clothed in strength and dignity.
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

Tell us how you met your partner { please include the proposal story }
We met on a Unisa study course a few years ago and even though we had a great distance (him in Cape Town and me in Bethlehem) between us we kept contact, a few months later he asked me to move to Cape Town and we took a chance on love.
We got engaged at Esona Winery in Ashton, we went for a wine tasting and on our walk back to the car in between the vineyards he proposed. I was walking upfront and he said “Excuse me mam, you dropped this”, when I turned around he was on one knee – it was a beautiful moment.

When and Where did you get married?
We got married twice actually, our first wedding (17th June ‘17) was in Bellville (Western Cape), we got married “legally” at the Bellville Baptist Church with Cornels family. Our second wedding was a week later in Bethlehem (Free State), we got married in Nurture Corona Hospital in front of my family and a few of our friends.

What made you choose the venue and the date?
We were originally going to get married in September, but life happened and we had to change our plans. My mom was diagnosed with 4th stage ovarian cancer back in 2015, and on the 2nd of June she was admitted to Corona Hospital, unfortunately the cancer has spread to such an extent that the doctors can no longer do anything for her. That is when we decided to move the wedding forward, I can’t imagine how we could have gotten married without her there, my dad also asked us to move the wedding forward as it was her greatest desire to see me get married. Due to her condition we decided to use the hospitals eating hall which they very kindly gave us for the day.

What was the theme of your wedding?
We didn’t really have a theme, I just had “green” as an idea, and we had to plan the wedding in less than two weeks, so we weren’t very picky. Luckily my sister is an excellent event planner and organised everything for us.

How did you hear about Blackeyed Susan?
I was looking for a dress designer and found her via google search. When I saw her business slogan I was hooked: "... a garment of praise, instead of a spirit of despair..." Isaiah 61:3
What made you choose the dress you chose?
It was different – I am not a “bridey” type, and the dress I chose was just so unique and spoke to who I am as a person. I loved the boho feel of the dress. Furthermore both my mom and mother-in-law loved it.
How was your experience with fitting your dress and the final product?
It was amazing, the first time I met Melissa I brought my mom and my mother-in-law with to the fitting, she spoilt us with orange juice and Lindt chocolates.
I had no idea what I wanted, just that I didn’t want a “wedding dress”, Melissa let me try on a few different combinations and when I tried on MY dress I just knew it was perfect, I did make a few alterations and she was so accommodating
I sent Melissa an e-mail about 10days before the new wedding date telling her about the situation with my mom and that I needed a dress, she immediately offered to help and made sure I could have my dress on my wedding day – for that I will always be grateful. My mom chose this dress with me, and it was so special that I could wear it on my wedding day.

Any advice or tips for bride-to-be’s when choosing their dream dress?
Don’t lose your own sense of self, too many brides try to fit into what society says a bride must be – stay true to who you are.

Your beautiful documentary style photos were taken by: Mari du Plessis from Frisson PhotographyWhy did you choose this photographer to capture your special day?
I have always loved her photos; she just knows how to capture the moment without it looking posed. Her photos have a natural element to it, which I also love.

What was your most memorable/favourite part of your special day?
The fact that my mom could have seen us get married is something we will always, always be grateful for.
There were two parts that really touched me:
  • Before the wedding my parents prayed over us and for our marriage, it was so touching and a blessing I will always hold dear. What made it more special is that my husband and I did not see each other, we were separated by a hospital curtain holding hands and my parents were standing in front of us, laying their hands on us.
  • When my dad and I walked down the “aisle”, the nursing staff of the hospital serenaded us in a Sotho wedding song. When I looked up and saw my husband, I fell in love all over again – the fact that he was tearful was definitely the cherry on the cake. It has always been my dream to walk down the aisle with my dad, also I kept telling my husband that if he doesn’t cry when he sees me I’m turning around and doing it again.
 Any advice for future brides for the overall planning of their wedding and how to deal with their nerves on the day?
Be flexible, things don’t always work out the way you want them to, don’t let petty things steal from your special day.
As for nerves – rescue tablets, seriously, it just takes the edge off.
