Brides are no longer opting for the pomp and tradition of a stereo typical wedding dress. Brides are pushing the boundaries aesthetically when it comes to what is expected of a wedding and a bride. Modern, simplistic, unique and comfortable are the new pre-requisites for brides. We chat to Blackeyed Susan's Designer - Melissa Roos how she goes about designing the coveted dresses for the new, modern, South African bride.
TELL US ABOUT THE BRIDE THAT YOU DESIGN FOR?
When I tell people that I design wedding dresses, the response is usually "Shame, How do you deal with Bridezillas?" Honestly, this absolutely perplexes me, I meet the most wonderful women through what I do. Having said that I feel that the Blackeyed Susan
Bridal Collection attracts and lends itself to a bride that knows what she wants, she is relaxed, unique and a down to earth soul. The women that gravitate toward our collection seek a unique, modern, simplistic and comfortable dress.
WHY DO YOU THINK A NEW ERA OF BRIDES HAS BEGUN SURFACING?
I think brides are leaving behind the pomp and tradition of what is expected of a wedding. Instead of adhering to stereotypes, brides (and grooms) are making their wedding THEIR WEDDING. They are creating a day that is entirely their own, uncomfortable dresses and possible family demands are left behind so that the festivities and celebration can be enjoyed to the fullest.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU RELEASE A NEW COLLECTION?
Blackeyed Susan releases a bridal collection bi-annually, but we often add a unique piece every now and again when we find beautiful fabric that instantaneously inspires.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?
We draw inspiration from a few factors, mainly from our brides. We can see what pieces Blackeyed Susan Brides respond to, we often elaborate on these styles or create styles that we feel our brides are looking for.
WHY DO YOU THINK BRIDES ARE MOVING AWAY FROM THE STEREO TYPICAL TRADITIONAL WEDDING DRESSES?
Brides have heard the stories from previous brides, the horror of passing out because the corset is too tight, or having to spend the duration of the reception in pyjamas because the bride couldn't breath or sit down in her heavily constructed dress.
It's in the detail, brides want a dress that can express their personality and be unique to them as an individual. Brides want to look sophisticated, they seek a modern yet timeless gown so they can feel like the most beautiful version of themselves.
HOW DO THESE BRIDES ACCESSORISE THEIR DRESSES?
This New Era of Brides are not afraid to experiment with the unexpected. As with their dresses, accessories resonate with the bride's unique style. These include biker jackets, faux fur cover ups, flowing capes, leather belts, trilby hats, interesting / unique hair clips, simplistic veils and minimal jewellery. Often only choosing one or two unique investment pieces so as to define but not complicate their look.
WHERE ARE THESE BRIDES GETTING MARRIED, VENUE DECOR ETC?
Untraditional wedding venues, often venues that are not specific to wedding. They are thinking outside of the conventional "wedding venue box".
Venues include forests, beaches, inner city and rooftop venues.
Decor is minimalistic but effective and not over powering, ensuring that the focus remains on the celebrations.
ADVICE FOR BRIDES WHO ARE WANTING TO ACHIEVE THIS NEW LOOK AND APPROACH TO THEIR WEDDING DAY?
Be yourself, don't stray away from your vision, be open to constructive criticism but don't let outsiders overtake and hijack your day.
Research vendors and suppliers that resonate with your vision.
This day is the beginning of your happily ever after, it's up to you to design it, live it and celebrate it!
